    who has studied the transportation failures of the 1891-1907 boycotts versus the successes of the 1950s boycotts (I don't recall if the 1953 boycott counted this as a success) to help show how things changed?

    Because part of the issue is the pragmatism -- if you're going to boycott a service, you need to make do without that service. Decreased cab fares, private buses, private cars, all of it -- the motor pool was vital. Moral outrage is one thing, but being able to get to work pays rent.
