to not have amniocentesis. She felt that she could never bring herself to abort her child, regardless of the possibility that the child might suffer birth defects. Her partner supported her in this decision.

They are not raving pro-lifers. They just thought this course of action was right for them and they have fought tirelessly to get their daughter all the help she needs.

I can't imagine my girlfriend and i making the same choice, but I respect their decision.

    •  I would have it anyway (0+ / 0-)

Not for an abortion decision necessarily, but so I would KNOW and be able to prepare mentally as well as getting any accessibility items ahead of time.

    •  We declined all testing (0+ / 0-)

and my midwife didn't push for it. That was quite a few years ago, before amnio and multiple sonograms and all that became standard procedure (driving up the cost of a "responsible healthy pregnancy and delivery" without showing much sign of better outcomes).

Well, not quite all. I did have to pee in a cup regularly so they could watch for pre-diabetes.

And it is true that if abortion is not an option, the argument for having amnio (which does have some risks) is not very strong.

      •  But even if she didn't have the test (0+ / 0-)

Why would it be a 'surprise'? If she had been in her early 20's then I could understand the surprise, but if she was 38 she should have been advised that she was at higher risk for it at least. And while not an expected outcome, it shouldn't have been a surprise.
