  •  Unless you have really good veins I would (15+ / 0-)

suggest going to a donation center rather than doing a blood drive.  My first (and only) blood drive took them a solid 2 minutes of just digging around at random (and I am talking about 45 degree sweeps of the needle while it was still in my arm) before they finally got it but the ladies at the center I go to always get it the first time, no problem.  As you might expect, that digging was awful, even worse than two shark hooks (done simultaneously) in the back*.

*Don't worry, it was all done at a licensed tattoo/piercing shop with sterile hooks/needles and their autoclave is spore tested frequently.

    •  Luckily, I do have good veins. (16+ / 0-)

I've only had one botched donation, and that was from a phlebotomist who didn't feel my vein in my usual arm (I should have drank more water, on my part) but refused to feel for veins in the other arm, despite my suggestion she do so.

She missed my vein, but not a nerve in my arm.  Goddamn does that hurt, an electrical, burning pain around my arm.  Thankfully, it repaired, but as a phlebotomist in training, this was a big faux pas.  If you don't feel like you have a good vein in one arm, ALWAYS CHECK THE OTHER.

And digging is bad, bad, bad.  They're basically cutting about with a miniature scalpel inside your arm.  At most, they should push forward, but most likely pull back.  When you think you miss, it's likely cause you went too far and are up against a vein valve.

Studying for this profession really taught me more about what to watch for with needles.

    •  I hit TWO gallons a couple of years ago... (7+ / 0-)

It took some 40 odd years to hit that mark, but I hit it.

I don't make regular contributions but view it as a crime of convenience.  If there is a blood drive at work, I'll contribute.  I was pleasantly surprised when I was going through the paperwork preliminaries, they told me I was hitting the 2 gallon mark.
