  •  Well, MLB is *technically* two leagues though... (0+ / 0-)

Although I still think it's a stretch to think of MLB that way.  I will have to look into the NBA's status some more, I had assumed they were also non-profit, but I admit to only hating David Stern and not really caring much else about their front office. :)

    •  Sorry (0+ / 0-)

You obviously have no idea what about what you are talking. I'd take the time to explain to you why you are so wrong, but you've already admitted you don't know jack. Here's a hint: MLB has a congressional anti-trust exemption, and the NBA is run as a for-profit corporation. Also, nothing you have said in this thread is relevant in any way to the NFL's non-profit status.

      •  MLB's antitrust exemption is not congressional (2+ / 0-)

It was a gift from the Supreme Court back in the 1920s. See Federal Baseball Club of Baltimore v. National League of Professional Baseball Clubs, 259 U.S. 200 (1922)

The business is giving exhibitions of baseball, which are purely state affairs. It is true that, in order to attain for these exhibitions the great popularity that they have achieved, competitions must be arranged between clubs from different cities and states. But the fact that, in order to give the exhibitions, the Leagues must induce free persons to cross state lines and must arrange and pay for their doing so is not enough to change the character of the business. According to the distinction insisted upon in Hooper v. California, 155 U. S. 648, 155 U. S. 655, the transport is a mere incident, not the essential thing.

The two leagues merged into one organization in 2000.
