  •  great mention RFK, thanks. I was actually in... (7+ / 0-)

Cleveland for an annual football trip with my best friends from home on that very weekend.

The day before the game we had plans to see the new Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and as we were getting ready had the tv on. The uneblievable news that the Browns were leaving to move to Baltimore at the end of the season was almost laughable, this being one of the all-time classic football cities, but it soon became apparent it was no joke. If we were slightly disoriented by the news it was nothing compared to the people of the city.

When we went downtown it had started snowing and we came upon the protest in front of City Hall . A few stout and hearty fans looking glum and dazed were holding the line. Was almost like it hadn't settled in yet.

The next day at the game we somehow managed to be seated near the "Dawg Pound." It was the strangest, most bizarre setting to be in that stadium among these forlorn, crazy passionate fans, in that celebrated section. There was almost a state of denial for most of the duration, like most didn't want to consider the totality of it. Near the end when the ugly and empty realization had started to set in it became sad and depressing. I couldn't imagine the betrayal the people of Cleveland would have to contend with for the rest of the season and after.

Legacy, tradition and heritage can't withstand the force of the profit seekers. Not yet anyway.

back for more.  MLB has multiple flaws (starting w/ Bud Light), but only 1 franchise has moved in past 42 years.  NFL has seen 6 moves in 32 years, including Raiders leaving and returning to Oakland.  Rumors routinely swirl about a team moving to LA (w/ Rams' potential return being the latest one).

Fandom requires a certain loyalty and sense of belief.  The NFL keeps playing its fan base for chumps.

Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not?
