in places like Europe to be highly exceptional but having given up their Imperial aspirations. Germany, which was only briefly unified (1871-1918, rogue from 1939-1945) has given up all Imperial aspirations but has become a model of democracy and manages to have better economic, healthcare, and political climates these days that we do.

We're not "exceptional". We just happen to have more guns. Our standard of living, our press freedoms, our political freedoms and many other measurements are far below many other countries.

be exceptional without being imperialistic, unless you think offering innovative and good value for money goods and services as imperialism.  Germany and Japan are world powers, but not because of their military.

We are heading to a world where the relationships between countries will increasing be like the relationships between the states.
