    1. Id like to see the Doctor NOT fall in love with every young perky female companion. Its become ridiculous.
    2. Ive given up on the idea that I'll live to see a 21st century Doctor who is not a tall lanky straight white Brit speaking upper class English. How about a little more variety in the companion department? We had 1 (very) light skinned black woman as a companion for a year. And the omnisexual Jack Harkness, who blipped in and out of the series quickly. Is that the quota for this generation?
    3. Id like the new Doctor  not to talk 100 words per minute when he's excited, which is pretty much every other act. More whenever they want to run a bunch of nonsense exposition by you too quickly to think about how stupid it is.
They keep teasing the fans the new guy will be more mature, because he's somewhat older. Id settle for him not acting like a 13 yr old kid with ADD who left his Ritalin at home.

    •  There's a bit of variety in the accents. (4+ / 0-)

Your point about tall lanky straight white Brits is well-taken, but the accents have actually had a bit of variation... the Ninth Doctor was from the North ("Lots of planets have a North!"), and Capaldi's Doctor is going to keep Capaldi's Scottish accent.

Companions swoon over him, not the other way round.

It's a children's show.  It's a well written children's show - but it's still a children's show.   The LONG history of tie ins with Blue Peter, the contests for children - it's never been meant as an adult show - that was Torchwood.  Torchwood was Doctor Who for grown ups.

It's always pushed the envelope a little bit by American standards - but it's a children's show and always has been.

show (which I agree with), I think thats an argument in favor of the need to step up their game on the diversity front. Its not William Hartnell's UK anymore.

        •  I don't think that means the Doctor has to (1+ / 0-)

change gender or race.  I don't.

He could use some more diverse companions - I loathe Clara and would love to see someone smart like Martha again - but I don't think that there is any need to change the Doctor into a woman or another race.

but the gender or color of the Doctor is surely irrelevant.

            •  I think that the character himself has always been (1+ / 0-)

masculine.  Race - I would be less concerned about melanin changing because there was an awesome actor who wanted to do it and auditioned - but a demand for "diversity" isn't reason alone to do it.  His companions are the humans - he's NOT a human.  He's NOT a representative of us, of the UK - he's an alien who has been gender and melanin consistent in 13 regenerations and 1000 years or so of his personal timeline.  Make his human companions represent human diversity.
