  •  Seriously, lose the lawns (0+ / 0-)

I see way too many sprawling green lawns in So. Cal. and the golf courses, oy! We need to have everyone be aware of the native plants (The Theodore Payne Foundation is a good source to start with) for their area and use them for landscaping and gardening.

    •  This will only happen via land use regulations. (2+ / 0-)

I can assure you this will not happen in Orange County where the likes of the Mission Viejo company and The Irvine Company control everything politics.

I will be asked to conserve so new homes (40K minimum on the books now) can be built and I can tell you right now... that won't happen.

I barely use water now. I REFUSE to use less so land profiteers who destroy the environment with impunity and who lie and cheat can make more money.

      Won't. Happen.

stop sending us water. It's only that which will force positive change here.  And it would require the drought last at least three more years.

we beat the peripheral canal the last time it came up, and i suspect we'll beat the delta tunnels. regions aren't solid politically, they're internally divided. the socal howard jarvis types will be allies of convenience on that battle, they hate to pay for anything.

        •  Actually (0+ / 0-)

Southern California is generally far far more water efficient per capita than say sanfrancisco and the Bay Area.  That's where the next big gains are (outside of the AG wattage of course)

have 40K houses on the books, we do. And in a VERY small county. And unless I am mistaken, all those 40 homes, and the open space and common areas, will require water.

There isn't ANY excuse for So. Cal. And I live here and have been involved with planning since 1984. Trust me, it's not good.

We are currently amending our Housing Element (of the General Plan), in particular with emphasis "affordable" housing.  Since we certainly have no lack of sun here, even in a wet year, So Cal is ideal for this particular "affordable" niche in terms of solar; it keeps the costs down and prevents the major capitol investments which add to energy pricing.  AND it helps with climate change which CEQA now requires analysis of for every project.

But it won't happen. They simply will NOT get on board. The utilities don't want it, the housing industry definitely doesn't want it. And they don't give a damn about climate change. Period.

We, here, don't help ourselves. And we never have.

We deserve our lousy reputation in Orange County.
