  •  10%? (9+ / 0-)

You're being generous. Among lifelong Northerners, there are only 50% who really have mastered it.

    •  There are plenty of former northerners (10+ / 0-)

in Atlanta. But some of them have been in the South so long that snow-driving is a distant memory. Perhaps I was being generous with 10%.

And another factor to consider: Many of those who do know how to handle snow will stay home, knowing how dangerous it is to be amongst those whose skills are lacking. Count me in that group.

    •  Once upon a time I saw a Jeep Cheeroke (6+ / 0-)

with a "Colorado Native" bumper sticker about 20' down an embankment.

The irony did not escape me, which is why you're hearing about it.

One of the moments of pure fear in my life was starting up a steep hill on the freeway, glancing to my right, and seeing a freakin' HUMMER in the ditch. While driving a rear-wheel drive sedan.

I'm on a mission! http://www.dailykos.com/comments/1233352/51142428#c520 Testing the new site rules.

      •  In December 1980, (3+ / 0-)

I was in the Navy and stationed at The Defense Language Institute on the presidio in Monterey, CA. One of my classmates was a Mississippian serving in the Marine Corps. His wife was from Buffalo and I live(d) near Rochester, so we drove his Mercury Cougar from Buffalo to Monterey, wife sleeping in the back seat all the way, due to motion sickness and diabetes.
I took the hairy parts of the journey, being a Yankee. In the evening we were driving through the mountains of New Mexico, I was driving, it was storming and my buddy was asleep in the passenger seat.
A huge SUV with redneck stacks for exhaust roared past. My friend woke up. "Whassat?"
"An idiot. We'll be seeing him again soon."

About 5 miles up the road, he was talking on his cell phone while standing next to his upside down penile compensation vehicle.
4 wheels slip on ice as easily as 2.

that 50% figure is way too high for competent drivers in snow/rain/ice.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. -Dwight D. Eisenhower, US general and 34th president (1890-1969)
