    Twice.

    But the meandering plot, the main character's seemingly amoral behavior, and the lack of proper names in a cast of hundreds, make for heavy going.   Great peek inside the Heian court though, by a first hand observer.

    Let's see, the Emperor's wife is the daughter of the Minister of the Left, and .... oh my brain hurts.

      is beautifully written story.
      describing the beauty of Heian era.

      Since so many restriction and references in the Japanese poem. It would be difficult to appreciate in the different language.

      I appreciate for the beauty and all those poems,
      but as a story telling...

      and also Genji provide the obsession of Japanese men for
      marrying the woman who you raised and groomed for the purpose.

      doesn't appeal to me neither.
