  •  I love winter sports, but.... (4+ / 0-)

I, too, will have nothing to do with these Olympics.

Putin is vile; his fascist state is vile; the commercial entities willing to overlook the Russian policies are vile. And the athletes willing to lend their glory to such a sorry mess should really rethink their goals.

I am sorry I cannot support the athletes who have worked so hard. But does winning a medal really soothe the conscience?

... along with the lucrative commercial endorsement packages.

      ("Amateur" sports? Yeah, right.)

Those "amateur" athletes need to earn a living, just like everybody else.

(I don't mean to put down the athletes.  They work their butts off for years and they get one chance, or at most a few.  There's not a non-Russian athlete in the world who wouldn't prefer to have this somewhere else, and I'm willing to bet plenty of Russian athletes feel the same way.  I do kind of scorn the hypocrisy of calling the major sport Olympic athletes "amateurs", but as professionals, they aren't very well paid unless they hit the very unlikely jackpot and somehow win big in a way that leads to a lot of public adulation/endorsements in a major market.  There are also "world championships" and whatever, but if you're a working class kid who is modestly supported to figure skate on the expectation that you "make your country look good" in the Olympics, you can't be too picky about showing up.)

Sorry, but I think that "you do what you have to do" frame of mind in "amateur" sports is a cop out. It is all really about the money.
