    questions to our resident bird folks (and we have a lot here).  :)

    But the basic answer is that the entire ecosphere has been under relentless attack for centuries now--everything from environmental pollution to rapid climate change to introduced invasive species to loss of paved-over habitat to half a hundred other things--and it's all falling apart.

    We are already well into the sixth mass extinction event.

    Some resilient generalists who can survive in close proximity to humans will thrive under those conditions. Most species, alas, will not.

    In the end, reality always wins.
