"unsubscribe" effectively lets them know "this is a valid email address". That's one reason why, in addition to my direct ISP email addy (which I never give to anyone) I have an address (several actually) through the forwarder one can see in my profile (and which is all over the interent on the bottom of every single page of all of my websites), plus at least three gmail addresses. It's one of those last ethree that I give when signing up for various (and sometimes dodgy) online services.

The only time I ever check in on one of those gmail accounts is when I have to respond to a sign up confirmation (which is sort of a Turing test). Then I go dark for several more months.

My regular email inbox thus remains uncluttered by undesired spam. Well, most—I still get some as a result of my visibility, but most of it is filtered out by my forwarder.

    •  Respectable lists honor the request (0+ / 0-)

I agree that real spammers treat unsubscribe requests as validation of the address.  But politicians, stores you do business with, and others who are not actual spammers honor the list.  Sherrod Brown comes down on the spammer side.
