  •  No, but that's kind of the point. (17+ / 0-)

    They believe we are evil.

That we are why they lost their job. That we are why they had to work a bad job in the first place. That their schools suck. That we are why the equipment at their job, or the bridge they have to cross on the way to work, or the sewers in their town is dangerously unmaintained. That their teenaged daughter got pregnant in high school. That they got their girlfriend pregnant in high school eighteen years earlier. That we are why there is a heroin or meth problem in their rural community. That we are the reason why Viet-Nam wasn't a war that made a Michael Bay movie look like a documentary. That we are why their bosses won't give them benefits or raises. Or a safe work place.

Because the alternative to hating us, from black people they don't know, or gay people they have never met, women who want more than to let a man define what is possible for them or their daughters in life, or working poor white people who don't seethe with them at people who are not the problem with Rush or Sean, would be to blame the people who are to blame.

The second they do that, they have to accept that they played a role in fucking up the entire country chasing phantom boogie men for their oppressors.

The first step to stopping being a useful idiot is to realize that you have been one.

I'm surrounded by "Tea Party Patriots" in Nevada.

That step is a step too far for a lot of people who are slitting their own throats for Jesus and George Washington and that little flag they wave all the time.

The one that is made in China, not because of me or you, but because the flag factory in North Carolina couldn't match or beat the profit margins that a slave laborer in some rural village could deliver.

    •  The first step to beating this nightmare (14+ / 0-)

is to stop thinking that we are in a debate with Movement Conservatism.

      We are not.

      They are a cult.

You can earnestly debate the friend or relative you have lost to the cult, but that only tells them that you are the serpent in the garden of eden. Tempting them away from the salvation that is promised them if they just do what they are told and hate who they are told to hate or blame who they are told is really at fault.

A part of every liberal's journey should be that recognition that the longer you think you are in an argument or debate with a cult the longer the cult will enjoy the benefit of the status quo that favors how they frame the enemy to their followers.

I have never met a Tea Party person who wasn't somebody who would be vastly better off if he voted for a 21rst century FDR and a new New Deal.

That's a bigger nightmare to me than how nasty or vicious they can be in a town hall.

played the clip and wrote that we are now dealing with "wingnut etoufee", a product of years of right-wing radio and crazy emails(I would throw Faux News into the mix too). These people can be presented with facts/reality and they will not budge.

    •  The irony is... (0+ / 0-)

That their teenaged daughter got pregnant in high school. That they got their girlfriend pregnant in high school eighteen years earlier.

Their own red state's policies and values are most likely to have been responsible for that. Teens are less likely to get pregnant in the first place in evil liberal states.
