    It turns out success has a LOT to do with the operation of chance. If you missed this story on NPR, it'd make a great subject for a BSBTG diary.

      It's largely right, too - look at how tastes in the art world have changed, or in design.  Some things are eternal (the 1970's were an awful, awful decade in terms of art and design no matter how you look at it), but look at how things that were considered obsolete are now considered masterworks (Art Deco architecture, Victorian furniture, and so on).
