My wife is a teacher, I am "on leave" from teaching while we raise our second child.  Basically, I've been "on leave" since 1998.

It is very difficult to be a teacher and have kids.  It's nearly impossible to be involved in your child's school.

    •  you are correct, but (4.00)
part of what makes me an effective teacher is my involvement with kids outside of class.  This is currently as a coach in soccer, ahs also included sponsoring at various times Mock Trial and the Muslim Students Association.  I also try to see my students participate in activities:  other sports, music, drama, science fair, etc.  I also have professional activities in professional associations, committees at school.  I tutor -- sometimes I help (for free) students (athletes and others) prepare for SAT.

I could not do most of this were I needing to go give my own children the attention they rightly deserve.

I spend about 1-2 hours a week doing emails and phone calls with parents.   That might be difficult.

And at the start of the year I call every single parent to introduce myself and to find out about their children.   It would be overlapping with the beginning of my own children's school year, which would mean I would not have time for those calls.

Thus while I miss having children of our own, I also acknowledge that I am able to be a more effective teacher because I do not have the blessings of that responsibility.

I just wanted to add the point.

did not mean to come across as attacking you or thinking you were arguing with me.  Sorry if I did
