  •  My salary... (none)
at the 4 year was a 9 month deal. If I wanted to teach during the summers, which btw are an interesting adventure, there was a separate contract.

For a summer term, you teach a 5 week marathon version of your class. I just got finished with one. 5 weeks...4 days a week...2.5 hours for the class. None of that includes the reading, cutting, preping, grading, and such...

I literally took a 16 week writing class and made it fit into the above frame. That meant I had to figure out what ideas were more important than the others. That meant that I needed to make sure that the students got the concepts that were being taught in a quicker way than I'd normally have. That meant that I had to make sure that the quality of the class didn't get undermined by the constraints...they have to be ready for the next semester regardless.

Things that I'd have a little time to a heck of a lot less time. Papers come at you from everywhere.

And in the meantime I have to also focus on my own research. Why? Because "publish or perish" is a reality...even for those of us who are interested in getting back into the realm of the tenure track.
