    As a Hoosier, I can tell you that the revelation of Dick Lugar's residential disconnect turned his status as a legendary Senator whose reelections campaigns ran on automatic into a debacle and humiliating loss.

    The Republican voters of the state were simply disgusted at his disconnect from the state.

    I suspect there are other long term Senators and members of the House who, if a little investigation were undertaken, would be shown to be living similar patterns.

    And don't give me that crap about not being able to afford it.

    $174,000 a year and I could manage at the least an apartment as a permanent residence in the home state.

    Besides, I suspect it would be trivial to fund somehow from campaign donations, it would be easy to convince Congress to set rules allowing such expenditures, for Pete's sake, as an obvious cost of serving in office.

    No, that is not the problem. The problem really is these people are drunk on the heady brew of being the chosen brokers in the power center of the nation.
