View Diary: Jay Leno Loves Him Some Unions (12 comments)

  •  Leno is a mixed bag (0+ / 0-)

Other comedians viewed him as a sell-out (see: Jimmy Kimmel, Howard Stern, Bill Hicks, Conan O'Brien) and there wasn't a corporate gig that Leno would say no to.

The frustration with Leno is that he (a)was  much, much funnier and cutting edge BEFORE he became big time (b) stabbed BOTH Letterman and O'Brien in the back to get cozy with the 'suits' (c) played it ridiculously safe with the Tonight Show.

That said, Leno made no pretense that he wasn't against gay marriage (actually had Ellen DeGeneres on his show the night before prop 8 went to ballot), was a union guy and his wife is clearly on the left-side of the aisle.

I think that Jay was NOT like the truly brilliant comedians who come from tough backgrounds....that made him less cutting edge, much safer and more 'middle of the road'.  Most great comedians are liberal, let's face it.  Conservative comedians pretty much suck (I'm looking at you Larry the cable guy, blue collar comedy tour, Hee-Haw et al.).  The great ones are virtually always liberal.
