  •  Bush wouldn't have known what Karl was up to... (none)
What probably happened in the White House:  Bush got pissed at Wilson and told Rove, "We've gotta do something about that guy!" meaning "get back at him."

The usual method for that type of retaliation would be to have had Wilson reassigned to a crappy job somewhere, for example on drug detail in Colombia, or on some inconsequential island in the Pacific.  And of course, if Wilson had complained, the news story would have been "CIA dissident pisses-off bosses, gets demoted, and bitches about it, ho-hum" and that would have been the end of it.

But all of Karl's history suggests he's a diagnosable sociopath, and one thing we know well about sociopaths is that they are impulsive, they can plan at a tactical level but very often can't plan at a strategic level.

So Karl finds out that Wilson's wife is also CIA, and possibly also finds out she's a Democrat, so that makes her a tempting target.

Meanwhile Karl fails to put together the BJ part (odd coincidence how another "BJ" nearly brought down Clinton, there is justice in the world, eh?).

Now here we should consider that if it's true that Plame was going after data on Saudi reserves, which information is protected by the Saudi govt as if it were atomic-bomb secrets, then it's clear that American oil interests -including Bush's and Cheney's friends- would have benefited from that data.

So outing Plame deprives the Admin of a line of intel it has a serious interest in.  This is why I don't think Bush was fully aware of what Rove was up to.  If he had known, he would have put a stop to it for that reason: don't shoot the oil interests in the foot.

But Karl would have been acting on impulse, as sociopaths are want to do, and would have done the deed without informing Bush and Cheney what he was up to.  And after the fact, Bush & Cheney would have had to "circle the wagons" despite being pissed off at what Karl did.

In short, Bush / Cheney had a motive to not out Plame, and Karl had a personality trait that would have caused him to do it impulsively.  This all fits together pretty well.

So the question remains, who was the other leaker?

If my hypothesis is any good, it would have had to be someone with a personality trait that was inclined toward revenge and impulsiveness, but who was largely ignorant of the issues related to oil interests.   Any guesses?

    •  Well, who departed? (none)
Why did Douglas Feith resign so quickly when he was one of the neo-cons? Scooter Libby gave permission for the reporters to talk about their conversations.  Tenet was still there and now gone. And why did GW have to get a lawyer? Because maybe he did tell someone or a few people that she was CIA. And then there is Karen Hughes who has been flying under the radar lately. Had Ari left yet?

The Fall guy will probably be someone we have never heard of as in Deep Throat. Felt who???????????

Do you think they are drawing straws over in the WH?

    •  Or (none)
Perhaps the oil interests and Saudi family would prefer US intelligence deaf and dumb about their affairs.  Perhaps they got exactly what they wanted and the vindictive Karl just thought he was being his usual vindictive self.
      •  yes, that makes sense (none)

So then the question: was someone acting at the behest of the Saudis?

That would make them an agent of a foreign government, if I'm not mistaken.  Is that enough to qualify for criminal charges?

    •  it has been reported that Bush knew (none)
and did nothing about he was complicit in the outing and, therefore, punishable as well--if these witnesses turn out to be telling the truth...

Witnesses told a federal grand jury President George W. Bush knew about, and took no action to stop, the release of a covert CIA operative's name to a journalist in an attempt to discredit her husband, a critic of administration policy in Iraq.

Their damning testimony has prompted Bush to contact an outside lawyer for legal advice because evidence increasingly points to his involvement in the leak of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame's name to syndicated columnist Robert Novak.

The move suggests the president anticipates being questioned by prosecutors. Sources say grand jury witnesses have implicated the President and his top advisor, Karl Rove.

    •  John Hannah? David Wurmser? (none)
Wilson's pointed to both of them in the past -- and also to Elliot Abrams.

The googling is rich on all three.

    •  Bolton (4.00)

I'm starting to think it was Bolton.  He got NSA transcripts on US persons (not an easy task), and he's been refusing to give same to the Senate in his confirmation hearings.

What if those transcripts pertained to Wilson and/or Plame...?

Bolton certainly has shown impulsive and vindictive behavior, no question about that.

So: subpoena his staffers, who had access to the material.

If this turns out to be the case, the shit is going to hit the fan bigtime.  Bolton plus Rove.

As for whether Bush knew and let it pass: if the perps downplayed the significance of it, he might have let it pass without being sufficiently knowledgeable about what "it" was to be considered culpable.

I'm starting to think that simply getting a bunch of them on lesser included charges such as perjury and disclosure of classified information (as opposed to e.g. treason) might be useful.  The key here is to a) take them out of circulation until after 2008, and a few years in prison will do that; and b) get enough political traction from this to sway the '06 and '08 elections: all it takes is a few percent of the voters; and c) the lesser included charges won't kick up as big a battle from the White House, so we're more likely to get convictions faster.

    •  several things (none)
-What is exactly BJ still unclear (The article only make weak leap that BJ works for aramco. most newspaper can't even locate their building, let alone what they do)

If the connection above can be proven, then the theory has legs. Otherwise, no story.

-Figuring out 'peak oil' doesn't need such high caliber spy. (a person with background tracking nuclear activities? come on... over kill don't you think?)  Peak oil data is geological/mining data. It can be estimated some otherway. Simple bribes here and ther would do it. Why send a NOC? doesn't make sense.

-Bushies are crude. It fits their pattern. They are not smooth enough to pull fine art of long term scheming with such great delicacy.
