I spent a summer in Europe when I was twenty-five.  I originally went over with a friend but he got sick within the first week and went back so I was left with only a back pack and a Eurail pass (Greatest thing ever!).  I visited Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Luxemburg, Denmark, Sweden and Norway.  Portugal and Spain were the most memorable--at least 40 years later!.

I spent a summer 35 years later in the UK.  Most of the time in Northern England and Scotland.  Inverness and the NW islands were the best--Skye, Mull, Iona…

A year or two after that it was Guatemala and Mexico.  Guatemala is flat-out beautiful.  Lake Atitlan, Panahachel, Antigua…Stay out of Guatemala City.  Of all the cities I've visited I gotta say that Oaxaca is my favorite.  Great food, great people, great scenery…You can have Paris or Rome…I'll take Oaxaca.

I've also been to Canada numerous times.  I grew up in ND and Winnipeg was the closest city of any size so that's where we went.  Also shorter trips to Jamaica.

I wish I could still do the back pack thing but at 65 I don't think I'd last long.  Now when I go I find a B&B and plant myself with day trips out and back.  You do get to know some locals who can give you tips on food, places etc.  It's a great way to get to see a different side of a place that you don't often see on the standard tour routes.
