    That being said -- H.P. Lovecraft pointed at a a book called "The King in Yellow" as an example of successful horror in an essay on that kind of literature.

    It is a horrible book alright -- rotten writing style spread out among several crappy short stories. I will not provide author or links. Almost ANY pulp-hack tossed off better stuff than this.

    His pal Clarke Ashton Smith was pretty bad too, both as a writer and artist IMHO, but got mentioned anyway in a number of Lovecraft's stories.

    Robert Bloch is far from being one of my favorites, but he wrote better than many of Lovecraft's friends, and got a starring role in Haunter of the Dark.
