    Strangers on a Train

      the book I recommend it; the author, Patricia Highsmith, wrote a lot of really good suspense novels. One of the things which makes them so addictive is that you really don't know whether the main character will emerge triumphant at the end; in some of her novels a basically good lead character winds up losing and in others a basically bad character narrowly escapes punishment in the end.)

      By the way, my original clue for this one was going to be the elegant and symmetrical

      I had thought that rr (for railroad) could mean train. But when I checked railroad apparently means the tracks which trains run on -- not the trains themselves. So, regretfully, I abandoned that clue, looked up names of various Amtrak trains, and substituted in one of those.
