You and I are very lucky that we had access to life-saving surgeries. From the surgeon's perspective, he or she is going to answer all of your questions, but rarely will a surgeon go out of the way to address all of a patient's concerns if the patient doesn't voice them himself. Many patients simply do not wish to know all of the details. In any event, today all of that information is available on websites (including tons of personal testimonials from patients who underwent partial and full laparoscopic and non-laparoscopic colectomies). The incidence of complications with intestinal surgery, including an ileus, is very common, as digestive tract surgeries are by their nature messy. The fact that you are complaining that you wanted to get back to work very quickly but couldn't tells me that you did not take into account how serious such surgeries are. Did any doctor, surgeon or otherwise, really tell you that this was no big deal?

The bottom line is that you are so very fortunate that you were able to get what sounds like competent medical treatment. Be thankful that you are alive.

and just what was very much needed.  But patient education MUST be part of the process, and if a patient appears indifferent or oblivious, try a little harder to get their attention.

It sounds to me like greater access to nursing followup care could have alleviated both the constipation issues (taper pain meds, increase stool softeners, adjust diet)  and the infected incision (better wound care, expert assessment).

for all types of constipation. The trick is not to wait, take the stool softener immediately when you first feel constipated.

The problem with constipation is, the longer you wait, the worse it gets.
