    this spill affects my home state of Virginia, which gets some of its drinking water from the Dan River.  Virginia is purple, and so it sits perpetually on the razor's edge between supporting new environmental regulations and ditching those we already have.

    We made great strides following the poisoning of the James River by Kepone in the 1970s.  But memories of that disaster eventually faded, and over the last two decades our state environmental agencies have been gutted.

    Hopefully the newly inaugurated Democratic governor, Terry McAuliffe, can leverage the publicity from this mess and nudge Virginians back to a mindset that understands and appreciates the need for strong environmental protections.
