  •  Chuck Darwin and Abe Lincoln were born 2/12/1809 (13+ / 0-)

205 years ago. R&D departments have celebrated with boxes of doughnuts with their pictures attached. Captioned take a dounut if you  like at least one of thes guys. If you don't like either don't take one.  And Darwin's birthday is not obscure for any biologist. His 200th birth year was celebrated with series of lectures and events at many universities. His role in shaping the modern world continues to be felt and unfortunately controversial according to many idiots.

Life is just a bowl of Cherries, that stain your hands and clothes and have pits that break your teeth.

    •  Just want to point out... (6+ / 0-)

...that biologists take this seriously, since evolutionary theory is biology's General Relativity.  It's a big deal.

      •  I have never heard of Darwin Day (0+ / 0-)

and I can't recall any of my bio-related colleagues mentioning it either.

[I'm a professional researcher affiliated with a university. I would like to think I would have heard of such a thing.]

        •  It's always sad... (0+ / 0-)

...when you're not invited to the birthday party.

It's been going on since he died, sponsored at first by his widow.  The 1909 celebration was the first big one, with cake and a clown - okay, I made up the part about the clown - but they did commission a bronze bust of the man for the occasion.  The modern celebrations date from the late 1950s.  They became more organized about twenty years ago.

Now you know.  Do a google, Darwin Festivals and Darwin Days are all over the internet like a rash.
