It's amazing how the "right" has embraced anti-science to the point of handcuffing American science and invention. The reason we rose to the top of world economies is that we respected both science and invention. Now we court Luddite idiots and pseudo-religious denialists, in an "unholy alliance" that will doom us to mediochrite in world economics.

I sat next to a very annoying couple on a plane yesterday. The American was trying to defend the accusation from the Canadian that Americans just keep shouting "we're #1" without any effort or evidence to back it up! If we deny science, we won't be in the lead very long.

No question: All of modern biology, statistics and in fact cutting-edge electronics is based on the same science that underlies evolution. The idiots who want to garner votes by courting the religious right are handicapping our economy.

    •  Particle physics backstops evolution... (7+ / 0-) does astronomy, physics, mathematics, and geology.  Pull on a thread in evolutionary theory and you'll find it linked directly or indirectly to all of modern science.

      •  And think of the direct inquiries it gave birth to (7+ / 0-)

When Darwin published On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection the mechanisms of diversity was not known, neither was genetics or its basis in DNA.  Expanding knowledge about evolution and natural selection led to many new and productive inquiries - a fact about science so easily disremembered by creationists.

And, thinking about physics; did you know that some of the early biologists like Stent and McAllister were physicists who turned they keen eyes upon bacteriophages as a means of understanding the molecular basis of genetics?  Then came a wave of fundamental inquiries centering around Phage Lambda.  What an amazing group of researchers!  Some of my work is cited in that article and it was a glorious time to be doing a little of that research (Even seeing my name among some of those giants of molecular genetics is a little thrill)

The great enterprise of science with all of its harmonious parts is something that people who resort to "god did it" will never know.
