  •  Free Karina Hansen (3+ / 0-)

Karina Hansen is a political prisoner in Denmark.

Well, actually, she's a twenty-five year old woman with myalgic encephalomyelitis, who was forcibly taken from her home against her will, and has been held incommunicado in a mental hospital, and forced into treatments that she did not consent to.

A few details.  She was tried and found competent.   She signed guardianship to her parents.   She refused treatment.  She has been denied access to her family.  She has been denied access to her lawyer that she hired.   These are all in violation of European Union definition of patient's rights.

One Year Later, Karina Hansen still confined in Mental Ward.

Update 2: Human Rights denied: Something rotten in the state of Denmark: Karina Hansen’s story

"Experimental Therapy forced on a severely ill ME patient"

"She tells nurses, 'You are killing me'"

She is so very much like my daughter.  So many of the same symptoms, but worse.   My daughter has a similar neuroimmune disorder, with a great deal of overlap, but not as severe.   So, it's easy for us to imagine ourselves in the place of this young lady and her parents.   There have been others treated in a similar fashion, like  Sophia Mirza.   Graded Exercise Therapy, which is being forced on her, could kill her.  And, besides, to force this therapy on someone who does not consent to it is basically forced labor -- torture.

Her parents clearly love her desperately, and all they want to do is visit her, and hear for themselves what her wishes are.  Or, at least, to have someone reliable visit her and confirm that she has stated (or reliably indicated) the wish to not see them.   Or, at least make sure that her lawyer can visit her.   And, to be provided with documentation for what the legal justifications are for the manner in which her guardianship papers have been ignored, and they have been denied visitation rights, and why Karina has been denied access to her cell phone.

Just like any parent would ask these questions.

Their daughter is deathly ill, and fallen into the hands of strangers, and they cannot even ensure themselves that her rights are being respected.

The only thing that will save her now, is a big, huge, international spotlight, shining on these human rights abuses, for all the world to see.

    about Myalgic Encephalomyelitis

The problem with letting doctors make a final decision in medical cases, is that there are no objectively "right" answers in complex medical cases.   There are just medical opinions, and it remains the right of a patient, or the next of kin or assigned guardian, to sort through these options and make a choice.   These choices have been taken away from Karina Hansen and her family.  Absolute power, has corrupted absolutely, and Karina is now treated like a possession, a slave.   Not a human being.
