  •  I like having several numbers to choose from, (9+ / 0-)

depending on the standards we wish to apply, but even the lowest is a significant achievement:  2,400,000 adults (19-64) so far have coverage through Medicaid who were not eligible before the ACA. It would be many millions more if all the states accepted Medicaid expansion.

According to a report issued last July by the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured, if all states accepted Medicaid Expansion the number of uninsured would be reduced by an additional ten million people. The comprehensive report noted, however, that 4.9 million of those people were living in states that had refused the expansion and another 1.5 million were in states that had not yet decided. http://kaiserfamilyfoundation.files.wordpress.com/...

Nevertheless, on page 111 of the recent Congressional Budget Office report, the projection is that

the number of people enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP will be substantially higher—by 8 million in 2014 and by 12 million to 13 million people every year between 2015 and 2024— than would have been the case in the absence of the ACA.

    •  I don't think that's the idea. (1+ / 0-)

That's the old statistics professor's warning: using the data the way a drunk uses a streetlamp -- for support rather than illumination.

The author is not providing choices so much as refusing to overreach and pretend that the data is better than  it is.

      Kudos for that.

      •  These are the numbers and categories (0+ / 0-)

for Medicaid enrollment on Brainwrap's spreadsheet, all carefully documented:

        1) 7,331,308 - reported by HHS, CMS, and states
        2) 5,277,624 - Medicaid Expansion States ONLY (includes "woodwork" enrollees)
        3) 2,400,000 - Strictest Estimate: Medicaid Expansion States ONLY, NO "woodwork" or "normal churn" enrollees included for those states: 2,400,000

        •  Context is everything unless you are doing pure (0+ / 0-)

          math.

Those "categories" are included, but brainwrap also details that there are problems with some of them that render them less than enlightening.  If your goal is propaganda, and it might be, that distinction is unimportant. If your goal is truth and good decision-making, it is.
