    winter plumage might be different in your neck of the country. Male Juncos here in the PNW have lots of contrast - dark heads, pale bellies, tan/grey sides; females look as if they've been run through the wash too many times. Except for the petticoats. Both sexes have bright petticoats.

    Ahem... I wrote all of that and then checked one of my bird guides to see if I'd remembered local junco plumage correctly. I had, but then realized to my embarrassment that I'd never paid much mind to all of the different versions of Junco that inhabit the country. The books say that yours is the "Slate-sided Junco", and danged if the Slate-sided Junco doesn't look all washed out, similar to the female "Oregon Juncos" that hang out here.

    For the record: I haven't a clue if your curly-feathered individual is male or female.
