  •  Is he really done for already? (4+ / 0-)

Illinois is much bluer during presidential years, but I could still imagine him winning reelection. It all depends on the Democratic challenger who faces him.

    •  In a Presidential election year? Forget it (6+ / 0-)

The downballot effect from Hillary or whoever will wash him out.

    •  agreed, and I think he will run. (5+ / 0-)

For one thing, he would not be toeing the Teabuggered line with this vote, or his vote to cut welfare benefits.

I seriously thought that he was going to grow a heart and become more empathic after his recovery began in earnest. Sadly, that has not been the case.

But it is precisely because of his conservative voting that I suggest that Capt. Kirk will run again. Do not forget, there are pockets of moronity, inanity, and conservatism in this state. Lake County, DuPage, even parts of Will. Hell, in southern Cook County, where I break wind, there are 14 churches within a mile, and only one pub. Luckily they know me there.  When I was an election judge, the comments I heard were disheartening. Obama won re-election in my voting area by only 12 votes.

There is a warning to be had. I have not heard of one responsible, prominent, and electable democrat here who is gearing up to fight Kirk. And that bothers me. A lot.

A few counties that are very Democratic, and the rest of the state is red. This is why voter turnout drop-off might be an issue in midterm years like this November, when Quinn is up for reelection.

Actually, every place that has a university tends to be blue. Except Springpatch.

Interesting thought. . .  The GOP truly and completely fucked up by refusing to pass a farm bill for so long. Most of the red parts of the state are rural farms. (although, I never heard of urban farming before Detroit started this last year) They have to be pissed at how "their party" screwed them. If their memories are long enough.

          •  I'm in IL too. Kirk is not a typical Republican. (0+ / 0-)

His own staff describes him as a progressive on social issues but a fiscal conservative.  You may have noticed that he was one of the few R senators that voted to extend the debt limit.  So, from time to time he comes through for us.

I'm more worried about flipping the idiots we have in Congress (Republicans) from IL.  Holy cow, Roskam and Rodney Davis have to go in November.  I strongly believe that we can beat them fairly easily.  And, that high roller, Schock. His seat was bought and paid for by our billionaire polluter bros.

    •  He's fairly liberal on social issues (2+ / 0-)

like his support for gay marriage that led to him being honored recently by an Illinois gay rights group.

But, he's a fiscal conservative.. no doubt about it.

That, however is a combination most Illinoisans like.  I see him getting re-elected fairly easily depending on the Dem challenger.  If Lisa Madigan were to step into the ring, for instance, all bets are off.

      •  Lisa Madigan won't run probably. (1+ / 0-)

She became Attorney General in 2002. Way back in 2010 she decided not to run for the Senate seat that Kirk ultimately took. This year she passed over the governor's race. I don't know whether she will be AG forever, or seek another office after her father stops being House speaker.

      •  is that what you call it? Fiscal conservativism? (4+ / 0-)

Seems to me it's cold-hearted, radical and downright MEAN behavior.  It's not "fiscal conservatism."  I'm tired of people using these outdated and misleading terms to describe these cretins.

Taxpayers paid for his emergency room visit and hospitalization.  Taxpayers paid his salary while his body was recuperating and his mind was growing even more miserly, and taxpayers will pay for his retirement when he finally decides he's had enough.

He's a jerk.  Was before his stroke, and apparently that part of his brain wasn't compromised during his stroke.  Still a jerk.

      •  Mark Kirk (9+ / 0-)

is a major asshole. Yes, he votes liberal for gay rights - probably because he is a typical GOP closet case, but his stand on healthcare is despicable. When he had his stroke he gave an interview to the Chicago Trib talking about how he had "the best health care in the world". He had the best doctors and a ton more therapy than any of us would ever have received, all on our tax dollars, then when time came to stand up for the ACA, the son of a bitch opposed it. As a resident of Cook County, I will do everything I can to see that he does not get re-elected.

would support ACA and push for single payer as a way to bring health care costs down. And you'd think a fiscal conservative would support negotiations with Iran instead of pushing for more sanctions, since talks are way cheaper than wars.

Kirk is just a typical Republican. He campaigned as a moderate to sway voters in Illinois who didn't like the Democratic Party candidate. But he is just as bad as the rest of them.

    •  Kirk wins in Illinois because he is a wolf (1+ / 0-)

in sheep's clothing. He talks like a moderate, but votes however Mitch McConnell and Eric Cantor tell him.
