If your friends were in the military prior to the repeal of DADT, it could have cost them their careers. If you're in professional sports, you're dealing with a very insular environment; most of your friends are either teammates or other people involved in your particular sport. (I have a close acquaintance/Twitter friend who's an ex-ballplayer; even 20+ years after he retired I still see it.) By coming out to the entire NFL and the world, Sam is saying that he's going to control the conversation about what it means to be a gay football player. Look at folks like Aaron Rodgers who have to call press conferences to deny rumors about his sexuality (whether he is gay or not is none of my damn business). Sam is saying, "This is what I am -- deal with it." And the more people that come out and say, "Here I am," the more people confront their own prejudices and find they are not grounded in reality.

I was brought up to believe that homosexuality was "icky" by my mom -- when I got out in the Real World and met actual gay men and lesbians at college and in the workplace, and knew them as people with the same life and relationship issues just with people who had the same sexual plumbing as themselves, I decided that my mom was wrong (not the first time, not the last).

There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- goddammit, you've got to be kind. -- Kurt Vonnegut
