  •  Well... (17+ / 0-)

Speaking as a parent... it is a legitimate point that if all adult(s) in the household are expected to be at work because the city in general is not shutting down, but the schools are cancelled, it does create a problem. Young kids cannot be left alone at home, and employers (particularly of lower wage workers with less flexible jobs) may not be all that forgiving of parents taking days off. Last minute all-day babysitting during a storm is not that easy to come by.

They went on and on about how you should really stay home because it's so dangerous, but they keep the schools open? Then they cancel the after school programs so all those parents who did take their kids to school and went to work had to wind up leaving work really early to go get them. Some schools even wound up closing early. One woman where I work was in for an hour before she had to go back and get her kids from school. All that frustration for basically nothing. My cousin teaches special ed. 30 out of 130 kids at her site came in. She had exactly one student from her class. She spent 2 and a half hours getting there from the Bronx for this. She damn sure felt like a babysitter today.
