    is to look after the kids because the parents can't be there to do it and the parents need someone to do it.  That's the very definition of a babysitter.  He doesn't need to utter the exact word for the meaning to be crystal clear.

      Just stop. He said families depend on the schools for food for their kids, and so they can get on with the work they get paid to do. Disadvantaged families suffer terribly when schools close. Your equation that therefore DiBlasio contends teachers have no value beyond babysitting is reductio ad absurdam. Yes people should not be out driving. This is in no way inconsistent with keeping schools open. Very few NYC schools depend upon buses or road transportation. And FWIW friends of mine who teach in the Bronx said that graded projects were canceled so that kids wouldn't be endangered by coming to school.
