Every year, on the first day of classes, I ask "why do we study history?" Every year, the first response is "so we don't repeat the mistakes of the past!" The students usually have a hard time describing what that actually looks like, though, which makes the Nazis an excellent case study. The fact that Hitler came to power through the democratic process is a clear warning about how constitutional systems can be subverted from within, and looking at the composition of the various Freikorps groups gives a slightly clearer reason as to why a German with "too much" Jewish blood could have aspired to be a better Nazi in the 1920s and early 30s. Glad your grandfather got through it all unharmed.
