  •  The merchants of fear have long recongized (3+ / 0-)

that, in addition to fight or flight, the response to fear is to freeze.  So, if there's an interest in keeping a population under control and not running off at random, then fear is a tool of choice.
Take, for example, the fear of being raped by a stranger. That was/is a powerful force to keep people, especially women, close to home where, in fact. they are raped by many a family man with impunity.
Anthropologists studying other species identify parents throwing the young out of the nest. Just as likely is that mobile creatures are programmed to move out, leaving, in the case of humans, the people who invested in their rearing empty handed. 'Tis a myth that parents want their off-spring to wander far and wide and share their talents with strangers.
But, it's a necessary myth because the conflict between keeping people tied down (secure) and free to go (at liberty) is unsolvable, except by our taking turns.
Of course, people with poor memories and no sense of time find it difficult to comprehend taking turns. I suspect that's why so many of our team sports aim to teach just that.
