  •  I used to (6+ / 0-)

whistle a lot. Don't know why I don't anymore. One summer during college when I was working a factory job, I bonded with a couple coworkers over whistling. We played "name that tune," whistle version. On the assembly line, whistling was about all we could do! At my first job after college, the secretary/boss's PA would protest when I whistled: "A woman whistling is like a chicken cackling," she insisted. I did it anyway. A woman whistling, indeed!

You're gonna need a bigger boat.

    •  There's an old saying: "A whistling girl and (7+ / 0-)

a crowing hen, will always come to some bad end." I s'pose whistling was considered "unladylike" like many other fun things were!

My brother had a crowing hen. At least, she attempted to crow though she wasn't good at it. As she reached old age, she gradually stopped crowing, and soon after that she laid an egg -- her first one ever.

She died a few weeks later.
