    Theory, as described by Henri Tajfel. He wrote a great deal about in-group/out-group dynamics. Are you familiar with any of his work, Dallasdoc? One of the tenets is that members of an in-group demonstrate loyalty to the in-group by expressing hostility to the out-group.

      I'm not familiar with Tajfel's work, but the basic outlines of identity politics -- including the in-group/out-group dynamic, are referenced by a lot of writers.  Thanks for the reference to the original source material.
