    Don't be dense.

Moreover, I reject your contention that the Bolivarians have weakened civil institutions. Post some actual evidence if you want to convince anyone.

Also, the pie hasn't shrunk, it's grown. In fact, the non-oil part of it has grown faster.

You are as ignorant of the macroeconomic situation as you are the political one.

i wasn't saying they were equivalent.  don't be dense.  The point was the racial connotations of the term "strongman."  It probably fits Uribe too.  Definitely fits Fujimori.  Doesn't fit Kirchner.  Some Latin leaders earn(?) the designation; most don't.

I can see the "over the entire decade" dodge for what it is.  Spend oil revenues and print lots of money, it'll have an effect.  All in all, Chavez could have spent it worse.  But between inflation, making it difficult for foreign investment, and falling oil prices, the result is falling GDP and critical shortages, driving up prices.  I know enough macroeconomics to know Chavez's policies wouldn't last and didn't.

What of civil institutions?  Look at Caracas now. Look at GDP figures now, not ones averaged over 10 years.  I'm not trying to convince you, since you are clearly not any kind of neutral arbiter of what is or is not convincing . ..

      Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult.
