View Diary: On anniversary, Republicans 'blame' economic recovery on stimulus (99 comments)

  •  Typical (3+ / 0-)

They scream and howl and cry bloody murder and insist that the proposed stimulus is way too large and needs to be cut way back - to the point that it cannot be nearly as effective as it should be.  Then when their wish is granted, and the economic effect has run its course, they point to the stimulus as "a failure" - because it wasn't nearly as effective as it should have been.

It is a texbook example of why charting a course right down the middle doesn't work.  Because you can't jump halfway over a ditch - not without failing.

And it's a textbook example of why trying to placate the Rethugs never works.  Because no matter how much you concede to them, to them it's never enough.

All that is necessary for the triumph of the Right is that progressives do nothing.

...is possible ONLY when the ignorant are prepared to be reasonable.  But when they refuse, there is but one course of action left.  And that is to beat them.  Especially when their continued ignorance would continue to drive policy - to the ultimate ruin of all.

Why didn't the President come to this realization at least four years ago?

political environment into DC: bi-partisanship and working together, which all of America was demanding.

'Cept only one side was trying to be bipartisan while the other side had declared they were going to be obstructionists for the next 4 years and doom the USA to failure for the next 4 years.

          Guess which side got criticized?

          •  I realize that (0+ / 0-)

My point is that by the one-year point in his presidency, Obama should have been able to discern that unilateral bipartisanship is a loser - despite his noble intentions.  At that point, he really had no choice but to fall back on a strategy of realpolitik, IF he was actually determined to implement his agenda.

As Bill Clinton was so fond of saying, "Politics is the art of the possible" - meaning none of it ultimately matters unless you can put it into practice (although Clinton generally used it as an all-purpose excuse for selling out progressive causes and rationalizing his "triangulation").

But the point remains that politics is fundamentally about power: always has been, always will be.  And the reasons why good intentions without the deployment of sufficient power doesn't work can be found in the dynamics of game theory.

It's far easier to develop constructive dialogue and find common ground with Republicans when they know that you can - and will - kick their asses if they don't play ball.  Their primitive, reptilian psyches simply can't conceive of anything more complex or nuanced than direct stimulus and response.

Obama's failure to come to terms with that reality was naive.  Well-intentioned, but naive.

All that is necessary for the triumph of the Right is that progressives do nothing.
