is that it's hard to come up with an agenda that appeals to the working poor or working class white people that isn't caraciatured as helping out "undeserving black folks" by Republicans.

To that end, ignoring the racial dilemna faced by Democrats in their messaging and/or policies misses the mark.

I think its very easy to appeal to the working class without mentioning black and brown people at all.
All you have to do is say "working class people" and everyone understands.

don't identify as "working class". They identify as "middle class".

          and it is delusional.
"Middle class" never has and never will have a solid defintion. However, "working class" is real simple: if someone earns a paycheck.

          •  convince them that they are working class (5+ / 0-)

and then you may succeed, or use the term middle class which they already identify as for the same purpose you want to use working class. Regardless using a term that they don't identify with will get you limited success with them.

but I'm not sure if telling people something that isn't totally true is the way to go.
But then I'm not an expert in politics.

I don't think it is so obvious which definition of "working class" is the correct one — but in a way it doesn't matter. Personally, I think it's hopeless to try to convince most people that "working class" refers to them. That doesn't mean that it is necessary always to refer to the "middle class." "99%" is kind of brilliant.

since his 2007 campaign , but not many noticed it was a political slight of hand , he was never talking about " the working class " when he used that term constantly while campaigning , yet working class dems mistakenly thought he was talking about them

His type will cater to a few things that help the working class , but they think these things make THEIR dem party kinda dirty , they are education elitists / wall st groupies , which is pretty hypocritical considering where Obama came from / family back ground

                This diary nails it
