    "Trois Chambres à Manhattan" (I think it's translated 3 Rooms in Manhattan).  In fact, avoid any Simenon that is set in the US as those books are nothing but clichés.

    Actually, I love any Maigret mystery, but my love comes mainly from the atmospherics. Simenon knows how to recreate the charmed life of post-War France before the upheavals of the 60s.  He tells of Madame Maigret's felted slippers and her trips to the market and her fragrant stews, of the cafés where the Inspector stops for his chosen beverage (a different one for each story) and where he encounters archetypes of traditional French society.  

    How these books play in English, I'm not so sure.  Here is a list of Maigret's for your consideration  If you are really interested, just pick whatever you can get in English and give it a whirl.  It's not great literature, but you might have a bit of fun.
