They've been involved from the beginning. There may be some confusion b/c in Ukraine there are Interior Ministry troops in addition to regular Army/Navy/etc. It's not the case in US. Special Forces are not a part of the Army either. Increased intensity is b/c the police (well, primarily Special Forces) are trying to crush the protest. Obviously, protesters are resisting. Live ammunition is occasionally used by both sides.

Some say the police, etc. are responding to intensified protests, while others say the protesters are resisting attempts to crush the protests.

Lamb chop, we can quibble what to call it, but I think we can both agree it's creepy.

reached a deal with the government a few days ago. The government released all the protesters they arrested and the protesters left some of the buildings they captured. And in general the protests have grown smaller over time.

What happened today though is some protesters tried to attack the Rada (Parliament) building. They were repulsed by cops and the government used it as an excuse to launch an all-out assault. Which is what is happening right now.

        •  That sounds very much like an increase (2+ / 0-)

in the intensity of the protests. Certainly the number of people who have been killed has increased. Ten in a day. I don't know how analogous it is to the situation in Syria but the idea that it's not getting more intense isn't borne out by the facts on the ground.

If knowledge is power and power corrupts, does that mean that knowledge corrupts?
