two that you mention (GOP rebrands or the map above comes true), you have a point. But I think oldmanriver has a very strong point as well. Climate change is going to change things a great deal. That and the fragility of so many of our interconnected global systems are going to make "something extraordinary" a much more common happenstance.

If, for instance, a global pandemic occurs -- a not unlikely prospect, especially given the global interconnectedness of our transportation and economic systems -- unanticipated population changes could greatly vary among states and regions, effectively randomizing what would ensue. Similarly, were California and the Southwest to become less- or entirely uninhabitable, a great exodus might occur, greatly speeding up the bluing of the rest of America. Or perhaps climate change will reignite a stagnant Green Party in America (sacrilege, I understand, on this site, and I am by no means advocating for that here, but it is a possibility in light of climate change quickly taking center stage along with the ever-staggering economy) in those areas now considered to be safe blue (or at least shift the contest in those areas from red/blue to blue/green).

Alternatively, consider what would happen if the next financial crisis, which we all know is bound to happen since the structural problems that caused the Lesser Depression haven't been fixed, happens before Obama's term is done. What if the professional liars in red are able to dupe the American people again and convince them it's Obama's fault. They've been setting it up for five years now, "the Obama economy," blah blah blah.

Point being, any or all of these things could happen, and more will that we haven't imagined yet, and so it's pretty silly predicting further than a decade out what the lay of the political land might look like, and even a decade is pretty speculative. What you say about demographics is true, and is a source of great hope for me and surely all progressives, but it's not so singly important as to outweigh all other factors for the next generation.

    Just my two cents.
