    For female candidates, specifically because of sexism and the discomfort many people still have with the idea of a woman not only assuming the authority and stature that comes with elected office but also being bold enough to run against another candidate for the privilege. Putting voters on a first-name basis with female candidates can ease some of that anxiety. I'm not defending the practice, just offering an additional explanation besides the potential confusion with her husband. In fact, I would guess that the decision to go with "Hillary" had as much to do with softening her image and making voters who otherwise bought into the stereotypes about her feel less threatened as it did with distinguishing her from Bill.
