    which is certainly reasonable at the beginning. But if Omidyar wants to make this a truly international endeavor, his next move would be to hire journalists who are more familiar with other regions of the world: Asia, Africa, the ME, and Latin America. Regions which are under-covered in English-language media but where important events are occurring.

      are expats and likely to remain so.

      •  being an expat in a foreign country is different (0+ / 0-)

        from being really familiar with that country's politics, society, culture, etc. and being able to do effective journalism on what's going on in the country.

        Poitras is based in Germany, Greenwald in Brazil. But that still leaves out a lot of countries, even if they were experts at reporting in their respective home bases.

          a good bit of involvement in Brazillian affairs and media. I think that anybody who aims to be a serious journalist in today's world will have to become a global journalist regardless of where they were born.
