  •  cop put a gun to my dad's head (8+ / 0-)

40 years ago, my folks bought a business in a sleepy beach community. The alarm system was buggy and false alarms occurred. Not long after we bought, my dad was taking merchandise from the front window, loading it into a box and putting it in the safe. Standard procedure at closing.

We didn't know that a false alarm happened and while my dad was in the back, a whole bunch of police showed up. One of them gestured to my sister, who told my dad that he was wanted outside. He went outside, where he was put on his knees with a gun to his head. He can still tell you how big the gun in his face looked and he can still remember the name of the rookie cop with his finger on the trigger. The cop thought my dad was robbing what was really our own store.

My mother went outside and straightened out the situation, but we've always wondered if a car had backfired, if someone had slammed something or otherwise spooked that cop, would he have reflexively fired.

After the incident, our pictures were put up in the police station with a note that we owned the store, with the implication not to shoot us. For that Christmas and the subsequent twenty, we gave the police and fire departments a five-pound box of See's each, at the holidays.

Yes, we updated the alarm system.

his gun at me.  My buddy and I were in his trailer, lighting firecrackers, and someone called the cops.  Knock on the door, opened it to find two cops with guns drawn.  Damn good thing we didn't have anything in our hands.

Being college kids, they gave us the "quit being idiots" speech and went on their way, and we never did that again.
