My point wasn't to say it's impossible to grow weed without detection, but that it would be much harder to mass produce guns without detection.

By the way, you made my point for me.  "And it was definitely for wowie-weed; the smell was unmistakable."  How easy is it to hide that if you're growing it by the ton?

Very detectible, in that you knew exactly what had gone down.  But I could make a gun in my garage, sweep up the metal filings, and you'd have no idea if I'd made a gun, or a bike rack.

your counterpoint to my point is "that's not mass production," then I don't think a one-off gun builder is a good counterexample.

You're actually making Duckmg's point from above.  A gun made as a one-off in a garage would be inherently dangerous and unique.  It might not have a serial number on it, but would have identifiable ballistic characteristics.  Moreover, and more importantly, it would almost certainly be unsafe.

Ballistics is used to tie a bullet to a particular gun, or to tie two bullets together. Nothing about that ties back to the manufacturing source.

And stop thinking 19th century blacksmith. A 21st century milling machine would make steel parts that are plenty strong and exact copies unit to unit.

To cover your tracks, f.e.  Also, how expensive are such machines?

I'm honestly not trying to be an ass, I'm interested in your replies and will probably try to research this somewhat myself.

It doesn't take much of an error to blow open the breech of a gun.  Errors in manufacture, chamber characteristics, materials used, the hand-loaded ammo, etc.
