      The problem with languages that don't write half of their vowels is that you need to already know the word in order to read it.  

      Bought Bibles in Farsi and Hungarian in a used book store in (of all places) Chiang Mai (fabulous book scene there actually, what with all the expats needing to unload).  Bibles are a great way to practice languages; the grammar is usually simple and one already knows a lot of the stories.  The Hungarian Bible is easy although the language is antiquated.  The Farsi Bible is next to impossible.
