    I've been working on it several decades (since about 2 years old) and I would probably be challenged to flash more than 8,000 or so, if that. 5,000 characters is typical native fluency, 8-10k if you are very studious.

    Japanese grammar and vocabulary is more difficult, but the greater use of phonetics for modern words makes the written language more simple to learn.

    But for English speakers to master Chinese, Pinyin and Putonghua are the best way because you can learn spoken language faster and make study of written language simpler.

    I know some Western people who are highly fluent but barely literate, which is kind of interesting, because often it is the opposite with Chinese and Japanese learning English: highly literate but almost unable to speak. That used to be me.

    No one is coming to save us, the future is in our hands.
